If you’re looking for family photo clothing ideas, this Vermont Family Photography session with the Higgins family has some great inspiration!
As I grow my own little family, documentary family photography that tells a real story has found its way into my heart.
Even though I’m all about getting dressed up and grabbing a go-to photo for your next holiday card or that empty picture frame you want to fill. But there is something so magical about capturing the stories you’ll truly miss when you think back to “when your kids were little.”
I’ve been photographing with the Higgins family for years, and it is so much fun to reconnect with them, season after season, and watch their family grow. And, because Mattea has worked in the photography industry, she is really in tune with what outfit choices translate well in images and how to style her family for comfort and the camera. Here are some family photo clothing ideas!
Family Photo Clothing Ideas and Tips
The outfits you choose for your family photography session play a huge role in what you communicate. Here are a few best practices.
- Opt for colors that complement vs. colors that match (the images below are a great example—different shades of blue complement the white and yellow)
- Wear something that helps show movement, like a dress, skirt, chunky sweater, or scarf
- Avoid neon and bold patterns
- Skip anything with a logo
- Consider the season and make sure your outfit is weather and location-appropriate
- Make sure you’re comfy and feel like YOU!
When I schedule a session with a family (or a couple!) I provide an extensive style guide with in-depth recommendations, suggestions, and Pinterest boards for inspiration. I also make myself available for texting and FaceTiming ahead of time if you need extra support or want to run outfits by me!
Documenting Little Moments
These little moments and details add life, depth, and true feeling to a final album. These kinds of images pull me back into special moments and memories—like the little hands, bare feet, and “handing mom everything I pick up” actions—and that is what I want to give my family as well.
