Storytelling vermont family photography

You're looking for the giggle before the meltdown muddy toddler feet in your lap a photograph that feels like a memory, not a production.

You want a photographer who knows that the mess is part of it, and motherhood is (so much) more than a highlight reel.

inquire

If growing a tiny human has taught me anything, it is that time is fleeting and I want to remember every detail.

These moments are stories in action. And, in a busy world asking us to always keep moving, it is easy to forget how you felt when you were living in it.

The kicks of your growing little one, the moments between you and your partner as becoming parents feels more and more real, the small hand wrapping around your finger, the story time, bath time, and in between moments that make your life what it is.

Storytelling Vermont family photography captures these raw, real stories and emotions in a non-intrusive way so we create images that feel like you.

Share Your Story

When you reach out, I’ll ask you to share a little about your family and your vision for the session — kind of like a relaxed conversation starter.

Then, I’ll send over my Experience Guide, which includes all the ways you can personalize your session — from film and Polaroids to Super 8 and more. You can add these at any point along the way, no pressure.

Next, we’ll find a date that works for both of us. I’m flexible and mindful of nap times, snack breaks, and all the little rhythms that make your family unique. Once you’re booked, I’ll send you my Session Guide filled with helpful tips — from what to wear and where to shop, to location ideas and how to prep so you feel calm and confident.

Capturing images that feel true to this season of your life starts long before the camera comes out. It starts with you — and the moments you’re holding onto right now.

You’ll receive my Story Canvas — less like a questionnaire, more like a cozy corner to name the good stuff. The rhythms. The quirks. The people and places you never want to forget. What feels fleeting? What’s anchoring you? What do you want to remember ten Augusts from now?

Once your canvas is complete, we’ll set up a time to connect — either in person or over video — to talk through what you shared. Then, with the foundation of your story in place, I’ll stay in touch through email, texts, or the occasional voice memo so we can co-create a session that feels rooted, relaxed, and deeply you.

Every family is different, and your session can reflect that in all kinds of intentional, beautiful ways.

Want the timeless feel of 35mm film? A few Polaroids you can tuck into a baby book or stick on the fridge? Super 8 video that feels like a memory you can watch [and rewatch]? This is the moment to make it yours.

We’ll talk through the optional add-ons available — from analog formats to custom albums — and shape the experience around what you’re drawn to. It’s never about more for the sake of more — it’s about choosing what helps you feel seen, remembered, and reflected.

There’s no pressure to perform or pretend. Your job is to simply be with the people you love most. I’ll guide when needed and step back when it matters, always watching for the quiet gestures and real moments that tell the story best.

Whether we’re barefoot in the grass or bundled on the couch, the session moves gently — playful, intuitive, and built around how your family naturally connects.

Digital files are wonderful — but they aren’t where your memories are meant to live forever.

This is your gentle nudge to take the next step: print what you love. Design an album, organize frames on your wall, get creative. I have lots of resources to help you with this and I also offer custom-designed heirloom albums that bring your story to life in a way your whole family can hold.

You’ll get all the support you need to turn your session into something tangible — made to last, made to be loved, made to be passed down. Let’s make sure your story doesn’t just sit in the cloud — but lives on your shelves, your walls, and in your hands.

Becoming a mother transformed the way I see and photograph the world — with a slowed-down feel focused on the sensory story of a life well-lived and even-more-loved.

I photograph the loose curl, the soft thunder of little feet, the vows said through tears with your toes in the moss.

This is not curated perfection. This is memory made visible.

My style behind the lens: Whether I'm looking for bugs with your kiddos, snuggling your newborn while you change outfits, or exploring Vermont nature with you and your love, your session will feel fun, effortless, and like you're hanging with a friend.

My style behind the image: With a nod to classic film and a vibrant punch, my photography style is a little grainy, a little earthy, and always nostalgic.

My style behind the books: When I'm not taking your picture, I'm probably snuggled up with my dogs, my kiddo, and a spicy romantic fantasy novel (IYKYK).

Love stories? Here's Mine

"Our baby is only 8 months old and we've already done 2 shoots with Ali... I love every single photo she's taken for us and I'm so grateful to have all these memories captured (she got so many good candids as well!). I highly recommend Ali to anyone looking for a lifestyle photographer!"

- Devon

"Working with Ali is like a dream! she is punctual, great with communication, helpful, and she is always ready to take on any mix of people, pets and is the best with littles!

Her turn around time on photos is AMAZING, to go right along with the amazing photos she takes."

- Lexie

"Ali takes time to ask questions and understand what you are looking for in your photos. The sessions are relaxed and natural which is especially helpful with little ones.

Ali has captured some of my favorite photos that now hang on our walls in our home."

- Sara

"Ali went above and beyond! She took the time to get to know my family and my vision prior to the shoot and was super personable and fun to talk to. Her creativity and thoughtfulness fully shined through in our photos and she was able to effortlessly capture our family in an authentic way. I’ll be doing photos with her for years to come! Truly better than I ever could have imagined."

-Ella

"She's so casual, makes you feel incredibly comfortable in front of the camera, and really focuses on getting the candid real life photos, not just the posed ones (though she makes sure to always get at least a few nicely posed too!). I would recommend her to anyone!"

- Mattea

"My husband and I HIGHLY recommend Ali Macy! I chatted on the phone with Ali in advance to discuss details about what areas of our house we wanted pictures in, what kind of vibe we wanted captured, etc. and she really captured everything we talked about.

She was really comfortable photographing us in our own environment in the way we wanted — we were laughing a lot, and we felt really at ease. We both felt super comfortable being vulnerable emotionally and physically in front of her. Thank you again!"

-Alexandra

"She is laid back and flexible, and knows how to put her clients, even kids, at ease. I'm so impressed that despite chaos, she captured beautiful photos. She caught all the small details that really represent us as a family."

- Julie

"We had the best experience doing a family photo session with Ali! She made all of us feel so comfortable right from the start—like we were just hanging out and having fun instead of posing for photos. Her personality is so warm and easygoing, and she had us laughing the whole time.

I was in awe of how she managed to capture the love and connection in our family so perfectly. The photos feel real...not stiff or overly posed. Ali is amazing at what she does and such a joy to be around!"

-Mary

"Working with Ali was such a great experience. I was very nervous when I booked maternity photos with Ali. My husband and I rarely take photos and are both pretty self-conscious in front of the camera. Ali made us both feel so comfortable during our session and was able to capture such an authentic snapshot of our life. I personally was so worried that I wasn’t going to like how I looked pregnant in photos, but Ali helped me to feel so at ease and beautiful.

I absolutely love our photos and cannot wait for her to do our newborn session once we welcome our baby! Thank you so much Ali for so beautifully capturing this chapter of our lives!"

-Anja

"I can’t say enough positive things about Ali! Her photography style and editing are beyond beautiful; she truly has such a talented eye! She takes the time to get to know you and your family so you can make the most of your session together. I’m amazed how many wonderful shots she was able to capture of a busy toddler and wiggly newborn. Ali made us all feel comfortable instantly, it was so much fun working with her. We will definitely be repeat customers in the future."

-Kari

"Working with Ali was a wonderful experience! She came to our home for family photos and did such a wonderful job capturing the spirit of our families day to day life. I love her style of story telling with photos rather than the more typical stand and pose here photos. She was super easy to communicate with and very responsive to any questions I had. I should also note my husband hates having photos taken and he said he would work with Ali again! The end result of our session was a series of photos we will treasure forever! I won't hesitate to work with Ali for many family sessions to come."

-Meghan

"First and foremost, Ali delivered an absolutely stunning gallery! Communication leading up to our family photos was great and when the day came, Ali was amazing. She brought such a bubbly and comfortable vibe and was so flexible with our cranky toddler (lol). It felt like hanging with an old friend! I am so excited to order prints to display these super special photos in our home."

-Carolyn

As a mom, I totally understand and respect the decision to keep your children's faces off of social media and this is a choice I give all families from the get-go. Your Storytelling Canvas includes a question specifically about this so we're on the same page at all times.

My typical turnaround time for family,  maternity and newborn sessions is four weeks on the off season and four to six weeks during the busy summer and fall seasons. I always try to get as close to four as possible and I send sneak peeks within a week of your session so you have some photos to view and share while you wait. Your final gallery is delivered through an online platform called Pic-Time with unlimited downloads of both web-sized and full-resolution images. I send an Image Cropping and Storage Safety Guide with your final gallery.

I know how quickly kiddos can go from totally happy to a puddle of tears... and then back again! Before your session, I ask a ton of questions about your kids. What do they like, how do they feel around new people, and much more so I can be as prepared as possible. The getting-to-know-you process also helps us select the best location and activities to ensure your kiddos feel as comfortable as possible.  I will roll with whatever they throw at us! If they need breaks, snacks, or a moment to snuggle, that is what we'll give them!

I believe that the best images come from true connection. My ability to bring that out comes from an in-depth getting-to-know you process where I get a better idea of your kiddos' relationships with you, with each other, and with the world around them. Then, I gently prompt and guide sessions to help bring out the personalities and details you want to capture most. Think less poses and "smile at the camera" and more interacting naturally with each other! It is okay if it feels a little awkward at first—that is so, so common and getting us past that is exactly what I'm here for.

If you want to work together during the busy season (May-October), reach out as soon as possible, as these months fill fast—especially weekends! But, it never hurts to reach out last second if you're feeling inspired (I've totally been there). If you're available during weekdays and evenings, there is a higher likelihood I'll be able to squeeze you in last second! Wondering how and when to book a newborn session (since timing is more unpredictable? Here are my best tips!).

That said, I know it can be hit or miss with kiddos. If we decide to hold off, we'll reschedule for a later date that works for both of our calendars. Mini sessions are around 30 minutes and I deliver around 50 images. I usually offer mini sessions 2-3 times per year: Just before Mother's Day, Late Summer/Early Fall and sometimes around the holidays. I may open up a few mini session slots in the off season or offer them on one-off occasions if necessary. The best way to stay in the loop about these session times and openings is to sign up for the waitlist here!
