Wondering when is the best time to schedule a newborn session? Here are some considerations (plus, why Alicia and Jordan chose to wait!)

I love working with families throughout many stages of life. I met Alicia and Jordan when I associate photographed their wedding and was lucky enough that they wanted me to photograph their filmy Vermont maternity session.

Alicia was trying to decide if she wanted to photograph together soon after their son was born, or wait until he was older. This begs the question…

When is the Best Time to Schedule a Newborn Session?

If you want a true newborn session, the best time to schedule a newborn session is three to five weeks after your baby is born.

I note your due date and ask you to reach out to me when you’re starting to feel ready to have someone come to your home to take photographs. The first few weeks are a beautiful doozie, so getting through two or three weeks of getting into a routine is really helpful. And, three to five weeks is still young enough for the newborn snuggles, scrunches, and details.

If you’re like Alicia and want to wait a bit until the smiles come out and your little one develops a bit more of a personality before photographing together, the “best” time is the time that feels right for you!

Here are some of my favorite images from my time with the Goodwin family. It was so much fun heading back to Oakledge—the same place we took their maternity photos—to see how much their family changed in just over a year.

Plan Your Own Vermont Newborn or Family Session

I call my family, maternity, and newborn sessions “Storytelling Sessions” because that is exactly what they are.

Together, we plan a session that encapsulates the season of life you want to document. I’ll ask specific questions to help you brainstorm the most important moments, memories, and feelings you want to remember. You’ll have a chance to tell me more about the kind of images you’re most drawn to and the things that inspire you, and share any images you’ve seen and loved. Then, we’ll work together to plan outfits and choose a location and time that best represents your family and the story you want to tell.

Becoming a mother transformed the way I see and photograph the world — with a slowed-down feel focused on the sensory story of a life well-lived and even-more-loved.

I photograph the loose curl, the soft thunder of little feet, the vows said through tears with your toes in the moss.

This is not curated perfection. This is memory made visible.

My style behind the lens: Whether I'm looking for bugs with your kiddos, snuggling your newborn while you change outfits, or exploring Vermont nature with you and your love, your session will feel fun, effortless, and like you're hanging with a friend.

My style behind the image: With a nod to classic film and a vibrant punch, my photography style is a little grainy, a little earthy, and always nostalgic.

My style behind the books: When I'm not taking your picture, I'm probably snuggled up with my dogs, my kiddo, and a spicy romantic fantasy novel (IYKYK).

It’s those small, familiar moments that you’ll want to remember when the toys
are packed away and the
bathwater's gone cold —
the mess, the motion,
the everyday rhythms.
So we press pause. We
make time. We capture
what’s real—calluses,
chocolate, chaos and
all.

There’s something kind
of magical about the
everyday: how it sneaks
past us while we’re
making lunch, brushing
crumbs off the counter,
or trying (and failing)
to fold the fitted
sheet.
