hey there

When you’re pregnant, time gets weird. The days feel long (especially when you’re uncomfortable), but the weeks somehow fly by. One minute you’re staring at a positive test, the next you’re googling bassinets, building a registry (quick pro tip: you need less than Instagram tells you) navigating unsolicited advice, and asking yourself when you should book maternity photos

So let me help: the best time to take maternity photos is between 28–34 weeksgive or take, depending on your unique pregnancy, energy levels, and how you’re feeling in your body.

Here’s why that sweet spot matters (and how to know when it’s right for you).

Why 28–34 Weeks Is Ideal For Maternity Photos

By this point, your bump is usually round and visible (even in more fitted or flowy outfits), but you’re hopefully still feeling fairly comfortable moving around and on your feet for a bit. That combo — visible bump + not-too-uncomfortable — is the dream.

Outside of that window, here’s what can happen:

  • Before 28 weeks, your bump might not be as prominent in photos (especially with first pregnancies)
  • After 34–36 weeks, energy tends to dip, swelling may set in, and comfort levels can make a full session feel more like a chore than a celebration

That said — rules are made to be broken. I’ve photographed glowing mamas at 24 weeks and strong, beautiful women at 39. There’s no wrong time if you feel good and want to remember this version of your story.

Think About the Vermont Seasons for Your Maternity Session

Since I’m a Vermont maternity photographer, I also plan sessions based on light, temperature, and vibes (obviously). Here’s what that might look like:

🌸 Spring: Late May–early June gives you soft blossoms, gentle light, and a fresh start feel. Book early — mud season is short, but can be gorgeous!

☀️ Summer: Golden hour is magical, and Vermont evenings are warm and lush. Sessions can happen in open fields, forests, or even lakeside.

🍁 Fall: This is one of the most popular times — think crisp air, changing leaves, cozy sweaters. Late September to mid-October is peak.

❄️ Winter: Embrace indoor coziness with an in-home session (a favorite of mine!) or brave the snow with a bundled, snuggly shoot. Bonus: fewer bugs, more mood.

What If You’re Not Feeling Like Yourself During the Best Time to Take Maternity Photos?

This part matters. Pregnancy can be beautiful and hard. Maybe you’re not sleeping, your ankles are swelling, or you don’t recognize the person in the mirror right now. I hear you. I’ve been you.

But here’s what I also know: you’ll want to remember this. Not just how you looked, but how it felt to carry your baby. To be on the brink of something life-changing. To hold onto your sense of self as it grows and shifts and expands — just like your body.

I approach maternity photography with a calm, grounded energy. No stiff poses, no pressure to perform. Just you, your partner if you’d like, and the honest, beautiful moments in between.

Let’s Talk About When to Book Your Maternity Session

If you want maternity photos during the best time to take maternity photos (aka: that 28–34 week window!) and you’re due in the winter or very early spring, I recommend reaching out between 18–24 weeks. If you’re due in the “busy photography season” (summer and fall months) reach out as soon as you’re sure you’re interested in a session. This gives us time to:

  • Choose a location that fits your style (in-home, outdoors, seasonal)
  • Plan outfits with intention (both of my Vermont maternity packages include styling support)
  • Make space for rescheduling in case of weather, sickness, or just needing an extra week to feel good

Already past that window? No worries — I always keep room for last-minute mamas when I can, and I’d love to talk about what feels right for you.

Ready to Remember This Chapter?

Whether you’re leaning into softness, strength, or a little of both — maternity photos are about honoring the moment before everything changes. The best time to take maternity photos is when you’re ready to slow down and remember.

My style behind the books: When I'm not taking your picture,
I'm probably snuggled up with my dogs, kiddo, and a spicy romantic fantasy novel (IYKYK).
